GOD OF THE LIVING
Do not search among the
dead for the one who is alive.
It is amazing how stubborn we are as human beings. On
one side, we have God who gives us freedom through his Spirit. On the other
hand, the human being, in his desire to be better than God himself, through
tradition imposes burdens that are too heavy and impossible to bear. The Sant Cycle,
widely used in the church until the Lutheran Reformation, imposed masses or
services for each saint according to the day, thus, if there were eight
celebrations, so many would be the masses. Tradition has taught us to seek out
the dead to receive favours from them. However, God in the Bible is very clear:
And just as it is decreed that men die only once, and after this, the
judgment. What we should be clear about is that God is a God of the
living, not of the dead.
"And his clothes became resplendent, very
white, like snow, so much so that no scrubber on earth can make them so
white"
Mark 9. 3
The colour white
usually represents purity and holiness. In this verse, such a colour
configuration is endorsed by the bearer, Jesus Christ. However, in the human
being, no matter how much white robes or white mulches we put on, purity and
holiness will never bring us closer to that. This false appearance does not
give us the right to speak with the dead, nor to search for them. We can honour
memories, yes, but from there, to have another type of relationship with them,
it would be very to go against a divine mandate and sincerely and personally
unnecessary, because God is a God of the living, not of the dead.
"And Elijah appeared to them with Moses,
who were talking with Jesus"
Mark 9. 4
Hallelujah! Jesus of
Nazareth is in the middle of an encounter with two of the most representative
biblical characters both for Christianity and for the Jews, Elijah, and Moses.
Both prophets marked a before and after in the history of Israel. Physically,
these great leaders were already dead, but God shows us that his kingdom is
very different from what we can consider. He is, a God of the living, he is not
a God of the dead. This brings me a second very short teaching: let us analyse,
are we spiritually alive or dead? What is dead in our lives that needs the God
of the living? Let us embrace with faith the life that Jesus Christ won for us
on the Cross of Calvary and let us demonstrate the God of the living who is in
us.
God bless you.
